tall men : short characters

the paradox of our time in history is
we have tall buildings, but short tempers
wide freeways, narrow viewpoints
we spend more, we have less
we buy more, we enjoy less
more conveniences, less time
people lacking common sense hold degrees of higher learning
so many experts, even more problems left unsolved
potent medicines and deadlier diseases
possessions have multiplied, values have disintegrated

we talk too much
love too seldom,
and hate too often,
we make a living, but not a life
added years to life, instead of life to years

conquered outer space, yet neglected our inner space
cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul
split the atom, but not our prejudices
higher incomes, lower morals

these are times of tall men with short characters, steep profits leading to shallow relationships, not enough peace in the world, and more than enough domestic violence. these are days of dual incomes and rapid divorce. of fancier houses, but broken homes. ::unknown::
